Native American Student Association

Thoreau Parents,

NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENT ASSOCIATION (NASA) meets on Thursdays during extended day. Activities will be led by Patti Phillips, Thoreau Demonstration Academy and Lilly Williams, Indian Education Teacher.    Students will explore their heritage with cultural participation such as the Cherokee Marbles game, Stick Ball and the Plains Hand Game. Native crafts, storytelling, and other activities will help students to learn more about their heritance as well as other tribes. We will also include current events in the communities, stories of the past and tribal culture.

November we will represent Thoreau at the Tulsa University *STEM competition.  Each February, a team of 5 students will participate in the Muscogee Creek Challenge held at the College of the Muscogee Nation in Okmulgee, OK.  The Fall and Spring activities are different and all grades are invited to participate.

Please contact Ms. Adams via email adamsra@tulsaschools.org or by letter if your student would like to become a member of NASA.

*Good News!

We received funding for a 2nd Annual Native American STEM Competition and Teacher Conference.

This year, instead of only bringing in 100 teams of 5 students each, we will bring 200 teams to our campus. The first 200 teams that apply will be accepted. That means 1000 middle and high school students will participate in 6 competitions on the campus of the University of Tulsa this fall.

The date is Monday, November 23, 2015
